Among others, I'd like to have log entries show the time and entry type in the output, and it would be nice to be able to consult the log within the app, too.

Done in dd6d2491fd.

Well, there's no way to check the log within the app yet, but I'm working on it.

Feature removed. I have concerns about memory usage, which already is high enough considering #20.
